Desert Animal Companions of the Navajo Nation

Tuba City Humane Society

Tuba City Humane Society is a nonprofit organization founded in May, 1994, by a small group of community members who were concerned about the overpopulation problem of dogs and cats roaming the community.

Our objectives are: to rescue as many stray dogs and cats as our resources will allow and to bring them to a state of health for adoption; encourage and educate the community on the importance of immunizations and spay/neuter surgery for their pets; educate the community on the proper care and training of their pets.

Summer 2004
Tuba City Humane has many more animals available for adoption than are listed online. We have very few chances to be online, and do most of our adoptions through meeting people, and on the phone. We also network quite a bit with the Arizona Humane Society, and Noah's Ark Animal Rescue, both of which are in Phoenix, AZ. We thank them for their help in placing animals into good homes. We are also very grateful to Dr. Carol Holgate, who maintains a private practice in Tuba City, and is the vet for Plateauland Mobile Veterinary Clinic, out of Flagstaff, who travel around the reservation and northern Arizona performing clinics focusing on spay/neuter and animal health.

We also want to thank Best Friends Animal Society for accepting some of our special needs animals in the last few years, including Trey, a very sweet 3-legged yellow lab, Winnie, a blue heeler who had been injured by a bullet when she was very young, and most recently, Wierd Al, who fell from a 3rd story window and as a result had symptoms of brain injury. We are a small group, and if we weren't able to move these animals into another placement, we wouldn't be able to keep helping the strays in need in Tuba City. Thanks for partnering with us!

Tuba City and the Navajo Nation are still experiencing terrible drought conditions. We always welcome community support, including donations, adoptions, and foster families to help in the rescue effort.

Tuba City used to have a shelter, but it has been closed for several years. For lack of a central shelter, our group is composed of several foster homes. All of our rescued animals are spayed/neutered by Plateauland Mobile Veterinary Clinic and then set up for adoption through humane shelters or no-kill shelters in Flagstaff, or Phoenix, or adoption via this site or petfinder.

People who live in the region are welcome to support our efforts in these ways:

  • Adopt a dog
  • Become part of our foster network, helping to love, care for, and socialize a dog available for adoption
  • Donate money or services
